The Garden Offers The Coolest Ground

Post by Urban Farmer »

Obviously the garden is one of the coolest pieces of ground on the property, but what I actually mean is temperature wise. Just ask my giant labrador retriever that is constantly looking for a cool piece of earth to lay on and he constantly determines behind my garden fence and between my plants is the best choice of cool soothing real estate. He does not seem to realize he is not a small puppy any more. I have resorted to putting tomato cages around each plant to protect them, but he seems to not be phased by their existence and just bends them whichever way is most comfortable for him. I have taken wooden stakes and stuck them throughout the small garden area in hopes of fending him off but he just pulls them and uses them as chew toys. I have placed pots between the plants but he just knocks them over or shoves them away from wherever he chooses to bed down. I will even admit that I ran wire for an electric fence but after testing it on myself I just do not have the heart to turn it on, plus I think it might kill my cats, any birds or lizards that happen to touch it. My next step may be to put small bricks down over any "open" space which may also double as moisture barriers.

I really do not blame him, given that I live in 9B, where the summer temperatures get insanely hot. However, every morning I go out underneath the giant trees we have on that side of the house, fill his 50 gallon water tank, spray the trees so the hummingbirds have some water, spray the nearby bushes so any air flowing from that direction will be cooled, and the whole time I am spraying the ground. He also has an orange tree on another side of the yard that offers so much shade underneath it grass has stopped growing there. Why would he choose any of those spots when he can lay down and smell the rosemary and basil?
